PR is number one among small business marketing ideas

Marketing and public relations are both used to improve business performance, but they use completely separate approaches. Marketing is a commonly used term, but confusion about what public relations actually is usually sees it neglected when it comes to small business marketing ideas.

Public relations is about forming relationships with clients and potential clients. It’s about raising a business’s credibility and reputation amongst these groups, culminating in additional clients and raised profits. Marketing is not about credibility, but getting a business’s name out to prospective customers or clients. The most well known type of marketing is advertising.

How public relations and marketing experts each deal with newspapers highlights the variation between them. An advertisement in a popular newspaper read by a target market would be considered by a marketing professional. He pays the newspaper and can say what he likes with the area he has paid for. The purpose of this is for people to see the advertisement and purchase the product or service on offer.

A public relations manager on the other hand would use a different technique. The editorial information the newspaper covers would be his focus. This would include everything written by journalists and guests. His focus would be to get his company featured in these editorial pages.

This direction would be used to maximise the reputation and credibility of the business, because sources used by the media are instinctively seen as experts among future clients. This also raises earnings as people prefer to do business with those they percieve as experts.

Another difference is in the direct marketing space. The marketing manager may send out regular fliers to letterboxes from a local builder offering his services. The aim of this would obviously be to bring in more work for the builder.

The PR approach here would differ. A public relations manager may produce a regular newsletter for the local area full of useful advice for those looking at building. This would demonstrate that the builder knew what he was talking about, raising his reputation and credibility. This would also be designed to bring in more work directly and in the future.

These examples highlight the significance of both marketing and PR. Marketing lets potential clients know about products and services. However public relations is just as vital, if not more so, to demonstrate that the business is credible and its people are experts. In a hard market, this is essential as potential clients become fussier with their choice of service provider.

This can all seem extremely confusing to small business owners, and PR companies are not always great at explaining it. But what I have just explained is the difference in a nutshell. Marketing is for exposure and PR is for credibility, although it also creates exposure.

PR is frequently believed to be expensive. This usually sees it overlooked among small business marketing ideas. Major PR companies who have prominent corporate clients are the ones who bill the huge dollars.

But by learning how the media works and what journalists need, small businesses can seize their slice of the limelight. They can also put together a low cost regular newsletter that will do wonders for their credibility and reputation.

The importance of credibility and reputation mean that PR should be a priority when it comes to small business marketing ideas. This can be handled by either a ‘do it yourself’ approach, or by bringing in an independant consultant on occasions.

Using the internet to Market your business, service or product can be overwhelming as there are so many different avenues to take. Everyone starts by looking at free advertising and rightly so as there are many ways to market for free. However, one will soon discover that paid advertising is more affective to get quicker results.

Below are 4 tips and ideas for small business start up marketing techniques. Use these great marketing strategies to generate leads to promote your Ideas Working From Home.

Foot work. This is where you talk to friends and family, put out flyers, local ads and mail drops. This option is probably the least effective for the amount of time and effort required.
Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising. This is paid advertising through the search engines on the internet and can be very lucrative, but expensive. One really needs to get all the ducks in a row and be Google compliant to use this method.
Media Buyers. This is where one broadcasts adverts throughout areas on the internet. These are paid services – paying to advertise through third party sites. You will see these appearing just about everywhere including on the social media sites. Media buyers are currently really hot. However, advertising this way can be expensive and not ideal for a beginner or novice.
Organic. This is a good area to spend your time educating yourself – especially if starting out. The great thing about organic marketing is that you can do something once, put it out on the internet through different sites and if done correctly should gather pace and see exponential interest. By publishing under a number of different sites is a great way to promote your brand – brand equity. In other words if someone comes across your content and wants to find out more about you, then it’s important your name is out there as someone who is reputable and to prove you actually exist.

In respect to the four methods above, there are really three options to focus on and these are PPC, media buyers and organic. It is advantages to use all three methods, but organic marketing serves the best for the long term especially when starting out. These three methods are also used through the internet so can reach out to people all over the world.

So what is meant by organic marketing? In short, this is effectively free or paid marketing. It includes articles, press releases, videos etc produced once but marketed through a number of authority sites. Once done, these could be out there for months or even years which is a great advantage over paid advertising.

Let’s look at an example. Consider you wish to publish say 5 Articles. You submit the articles through a number of article directories. You then promote the links through Pinging, RSS Feeds and Social Bookmarking. So with 5 articles, you could create 20 – 30 back links to your site. By doing this you also start to dominate in the search engines.

It is easier to get on page 1 of the Google search engine through organic means compared to if you were trying to get your new domain there. It really does not matter how you get to page 1 and the No. 1 spot just as long as something is there grabbing the interest.

One of the advantages of organic marketing is that you would not get ‘slapped’ by Google. However, requirements on the internet change all the time so it is important to keep ahead of anything that may affect you. You need to keep the finger on the pulse with the organic community. Understanding where Google is heading is always a good guide.

People are looking for trust and a real person. They want to hear your story. You will be researched so the more you do, the more reputable you will become. What is making you stand out from all the others?

Using the marketing options above, there are basically three components to getting leads and driving traffic.

1. Targeted key word research. One of the most important areas in order to market is based around ‘keywords’. These are words people are typing into the search engines. You need to know what people are typing otherwise you are wasting your time. More importantly you need to know what the buyers are typing in as oppose to the browsers – there is a difference. Getting the right keywords will help drive traffic and generate leads.

2. Driving Traffic. Once you have the leads, how do you drive these to your site? This is where the different marketing options come in e.g. Web 2.0 marketing, videos, press releases, articles, PPC etc. The aim is to get the prospect to click the link taking them to your site, landing page or blog.

3. Conversion. The aim of the site or landing page should be full of content, relevant and of value. It is here where you are looking to make the conversions, opt in or what ever reason you are driving people to your site.

Everything you do falls into one of the three categories above. Following the flow would help understand what is working and what isn’t. If you are not getting the traffic then revisit the keywords. If you are getting the traffic but not the conversions then you need to look at your site.

Small Business Marketing Choices ? Where Do You Fit In

There once was a time when all a small business owner had to do for advertising was hang a small flyer in the window or place a small ad in the local newspaper, but oh, how times have changed!

These days, the landscape of small business marketing has expanded beyond the borders of what anyone could have possibly perceived way back then. Gone are the days of simplistic ads and in their place an array of choices have emerged. For the small business owner, these new options may seem overwhelming, and at times, confusing.

Today’s small business owner has many choices when it comes to marketing his business. Forgoing the traditional choices of print advertising, TV, and radio, the internet has become a vast ocean of potential customers and those with little knowledge in the area of online marketing may find themselves lost amidst the various marketing avenues.

So, what is a business owner to do when faced with marketing their goods and services online?

Let’s explore some of the options.

GOING IT ALONE

If you have a limited budget, you may choose to conduct your small business marketing “in house”. You may be a one horse shop and cannot afford to hire in a full time marketing professional. In this case, it is strongly recommended that you do some research before deciding on a marketing strategy. Online marketing can be very involved and there is a great deal of information out there to absorb. The options are endless.

Start with a basic search in Google or Yahoo for the term Small Business Marketing. This will provide a good amount of information to get you started. You can also look into Social Marketing and explore sites like Twitter, Facebook, and Squidoo. There are many marketing choices available, and before you dive right in, you should understand the differences and the amount of work which may be ahead of you.

BRINGING IN A PROFESSIONAL

If the whole idea of internet marketing, or marketing in general, makes you want to pull out the ‘ol 8-track and crawl into a 1970s worm hole, then you may want to hire a professional marketing firm or a freelance marketing consultant to help with the work.

The overall cost of these services are usually a lot less than one might assume and given the increase many can bring to your bottom line, they are well worth the amount you will pay for their services. The major benefit to using a small business marketing firm is that they cater to the small business owner. They understand the challenges that a small business owner faces when competing for market share versus the big guys.

Marketing consultants can be a great ally for the small business owner. Not only can they offer you their years of experience and a series of realistic marketing options, they can also provide you with their honest assessment of your particular needs; saving you money in the end.

If you are not at all familiar or comfortable with the intricate world of small business marketing, it is highly recommended you contact a consultant to discuss your needs. Going it alone may seem like the more cost effective choice, but not understanding your options and needs can end up costing you a lot more in the end.
